Welcome to Walsall Black History Month 2020

Walsall for All launches its biggest ever celebration of Black History Month this year, and want you to be part of the story!

The nationwide event traditionally sees the country celebrate the achievements of well-known Black historical figures including Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks. We at Walsall for All feel that this year, perhaps more than any other in recent times, represents an opportunity to do more than just celebrate the enormous contribution of Black historical figures and Black communities to Walsall and to look more closely at the Black experience past, present and future.

We’ll be posting a series of interviews of Black ‘firsts’ in the borough which will feature Walsall’s first Black Councillor, Moses Whyte, amongst others.

We’ll also be posting here, and on our social media channels, daily community spotlight features, focusing on current local ‘movers and shakers’ from sectors as wide and as broad as the arts, business, education, politics, health and policing. They will be sharing their experiences of being Black and British, their hopes and aspirations as well as their heroes and role models.

So check back daily for our latest #WalsallBHM posts!

Finally, on Monday 26th October, we will be hosting a live webinar entitled ‘Black History: Looking to the Future’. The webinar will include talks from leading Black figures from the borough, including newly enlisted temporary Chief Insp. Rod Rose from Walsall Police, celebrated author and business leadership consultant Jennifer Beth Blake; Andre Reid, CEO at Kiondo Design set to take the creative sector of Walsall by storm; and Michelle Cummings, passionate Youth Participation Advocate. Each will give a talk on their personal journey, experience and vision of the future in their respective sectors and will then take part in a panel discussion which will include questions from the audience. Spaces are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment. Book your tickets here.

Be part of the story! If you’d like to share your story or experiences, would like more information on our forthcoming webinar, or simply want to help celebrate and find out more about what’s going on, then contact us at walsallforall@walsall.gov.uk or tag us on Facebook, Insta. or Twitter @walsallforall, using the #WalsallBHM.
